Deane Keller was born in 1901 in New Haven, Connecticut, the son of Albert Galloway Keller, the eminent Yale University sociologist. A graduate of Yale (B.A. 1923, B.F.A. 1926), Keller was a fellow at the American Academy in Rome from 1926 until 1929, when he returned to Yale to teach drawing and painting in the School of the Fine Arts.
